About me

I've been working in children's publishing – in one form or another – since 1990. Groan!

I began in non-fiction, designing books on everything from the development of pyramid construction to how an H-bomb works. An interest in drawing, and a passion for explaining stuff led me to specialise in visualising complicated processes in nature and engineering. This evolved into a job designing how-it-works books for children's licensing where I also got the chance to write a few educational graphic novels.

Writing those inspired me to try my hand at a children's picture book. Since then I've been writing and illustrating picture books, 6+ chapter fiction, illustrating covers, writing some screenplays, storyboarding and developing animation projects.

I have won several awards and have been lucky enough to be shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway prize twice. I have also been shortlisted twice for the Royal Society Junior Science book prize (formerly known as the Rhone-Poulenc prize.)

My first 6+ fiction project, 'The Monster Doctor' premiered in November 2020 and is now a four book series with Macmillan Publishing in the UK. It is currently in development with a major TV streaming service who must remain nameless.
